Fungi are generally multicellular eukaryotic organisms that cannot make their food.
It is different from plants, bacteria, and some protists because it contains chitin in its cell walls, while plant cell walls contain cellulose.
Mushrooms:
A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus. It grows above ground, on soil, or on any source of food.
It is considered a fungus because it contains no chlorophyll and is a saprophyte (any fungus, plant, or microorganism which lives on the dead and decaying matter).
What is Fungi? Fungi are eukaryotic organisms that include microorganisms such as yeasts, moulds and mushrooms. These organisms are classified under kingdom fungi. The organisms found in Kingdom fungi contain a cell wall and are omnipresent.
A mushroom-only diet for humans is considered unrealistic due to insufficient calorie intake. The term mushroom diet can mean: Higher mushroom consumption. Eating specific mushrooms on a regular basis.
The fruiting bodies of fungi contain spores, which are dispersed for reproduction. Mushrooms are a familiar example of a fruiting body. They are formed from hyphae, the tiny threads that make up the bulk of most fungi. A network of hyphae, known as a mycelium, extends in all directions through the soil.
Fungi are yet another form of life different from viruses or bacteria. Like animals or plants, they belong to the so-called eukaryotes. These are living organisms whose cells have a nucleus and a rich compartmentalisation.
Fungi are not plants. Living things are organized for study into large, basic groups called kingdoms. Fungi were listed in the Plant Kingdom for many years. Then scientists learned that fungi show a closer relation to animals, but are unique and separate life forms.
By the way: All mushrooms are fungi, but not all fungi are mushrooms! Mushrooms are fungi with a stem (called a stipe) and a cap. If they're not a plant or animal, let's talk about what fungi are.
However, parasitic mushrooms will break down the organic material of still living species, while decomposers break down the organic material of dead things. Some species, like the honey mushroom can be classified as both a decomposer or a parasite, depending on conditions!
