How do you find out if someone made parole in Alabama? ›

Researchers can search prisoners by their full names (first and last name) or through their AIS (Alabama Institutional Serial) numbers. The results will display the prisoner's parole request hearing dates and whether they were given parole or not.

Hearing Process:

Please note that an inmate will not be present for a parole hearing. However, a pardon applicant may be present. Anyone present on behalf of the offender will be allowed to speak first and give any explanation as to why the offender should be granted parole or a pardon.

Three members sit on the state's parole board. Their decisions are final. One member almost always voted no in 2023. Last summer, the ACLU of Alabama attended parole hearings and recorded each member's vote.

Parole hearings are held to determine if an inmate currently poses an unreasonable risk of danger to society if released from prison. The panel will consider “all relevant, reliable information available to the panel” in determining the inmate's suitability for parole.

What percentage of a sentence must be served in Alabama? ›

It required that all felons, regardless of the crime they committed, serve 85 percent of their sentences.

Factors tending to show an inmate's suitability include: (1) lack of a juvenile record, (2) stable social history, (3) signs of remorse, (4) motivation for the crime, (5) lack of criminal history, (6) age, (7) understanding and plans for the future, and (8) institutional behavior. (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 15.

Failure rates are high. Less than half (46 percent) of all parolees successfully complete parole without violating a condition of release, absconding, or committing a new crime (Glaze and Palla 2005). As a result, over 200,000 parolees return to prison each year (BJS 2000).

Parolees committed for violent and sex offenses, overall, had lower risks for most violations than those offenders committed for property and drug crimes. However, those who had been committed for violent offenses did show elevated risk for violent criminal violations and serious sexual violations.

And while nationally 42 percent of parolees successfully complete parole, only 21 percent of California's parolees do not return to prison or do not flee supervision.
