I feel just like an open book,
Exposing myself in this neighborhood
Talking to people as if I'd knew them well
Thinking that everyone has come through different kinds of well
Lately I found myself in doubt,
Ask myself what it's all about
What am I doing here? What's this leading to?
What's the point of all? I found you!
I've got promises to keep like a cannon would land upon my feet,
Each time I fall

Every now and then in dreams by the river with no trees
Leaves are yellow, red and brown, and I hear
You whisper in my ear
Your love belong to everyone
I feel just like an open book,
A couple of words, it's all it took
In front of the bright white covers, still vacantly
Against my will, a drifting vessel in the storm
Pushed around, from shore to shore
I know there's so much left to see
I know I have so much left to give
But the memories remain, yet the scars don't feel the same

I'm not sure why the lyrics I submitted were changed - twice - to a less correct version. Here are the real lyrics, as I originally submitted them:

I feel just like an open bookExposing myself in this neighborhoodTalking to people as if I knew them wellThinking that everyone has gone through different kinds of hell

Lately I've found myself in doubtAsking myself what it's all aboutWhat am I doing here? What's this leading to?What's the point of all without you?

Well I've got promises to keepLike a cat I know I'll land upon my feetEach time I fall

Every now and then in dreamsBy the river 'neath our treeLeaves in yellow, red and brownI hear you whisper in my earYour love belong to everyone

I feel just like an open bookA couple of words was all it tookIn front of a bright white canvasStaring vacantly now freeAgainst my will

A drifting vessel in the stormPushed around from shore to shoreI know there's so much left to seeI know I've so much left to giveBut the memories remainYet the scars don't feel the sameFilling pages one by oneIn the warmth of other suns

Only recently did I discover this song and I've found many topics of conversation by scrolling through song lyrics on this site, so I thought, as this song barely has any interpretations I'd give it a shot.

The person in the song is thinking. He is empathetic, fairly extraverted, truthful and kind. This is why he talks to people as if he knew them well and I see him as someone whose appearance to an event makes people happy, tons of smiles around when he speaks to the neighbours and others, who he knows but he doesn't necessarily "know". He understands that everyone goes through their own struggles in life and doesn't think that he has things bad.

However, he is not totally content with life either way, even if it may appear so from his talkative and positive nature. He once had someone he loved but the love either didn't blossom or was onesided. Whenever he is alone he doesn't feel complete, maybe the person he still lingers on could have filled that hole but now things feel meaningless whenever he isn't doing something to take his mind off it.

They aren't a weak person, even though they may see themselves as one. Everyone else sees them as reliable and good company, so even though he may be down when alone, he will always land on his feet. He is someone who you know will be fine. He is someone who doesn't let others down. At least usually with maybe the exception of her.

While melancholic he dreams about her and sees her as someone who cares for others, someone better. He recognizes there are other things than her and he sees his positive effect on others but it doesn't feel the same.

In the end he leaves a positive note, because that is what he is really like. He is usually someone positive and he wouldn't want someone worrying about him. That is why the end ponders on possibilities in the future where maybe he finds someone else as warm and sunny as her. This is left vague because in reality he is still sad and doubts it will happen.

Maybe I reach a little bit too much but this is the feeling I get about the person in the song whenever I hear it.

Ave Grave Thee More Shallows So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation. i hear the seduction of new liberalistic pleasure in your cd Death of Anna Karina, The 1 this ain't for everyone Pas/cal 1 In the long run Cowboy Junkies, The 1
