Victoria Beckham's tearful words on David crisis that almost wrecked marriage (2024)

Victoria and David Beckham have been married for 24 years and have faced their fair share of ups and downs, with the couple opening up about their marriage in a Netflix series

Netflix documentary Beckham - David meets Victoria

The Beckhams have weathered both dazzling highs and daunting lows over their almost 25-year marriage journey, with their biggest challenge occurring just four years on from tying the knot.

David and Victoria Beckham's world almost came crashing down in 2004, when the sport star's former PA Rebecca Loos claimed that she'd had an affair with the footballer during his time playing for Real Madrid in Spain.

The married couple weathered the storm, with David denying having an affair at the time, and the world had almost forgotten the scandal - until the Beckham family let Netflix cameras into their home for a juicy documentary about David's life on and off the pitch.

Fans were stunned to see David address the alleged infidelity for the first time publicly, but even more so to hear Victoria break her silence on the drama for the first time in almost two decades - admitting her marriage almost came to an end.

The Netflix series, simply titled BECKHAM, revisited the storm stirred in 2004 by claims from Davids ex-PA Rebecca Loos, who alleged an affair during his stint at Real Madrid. Other women also came forward with accusations, all dismissed by David as "ludicrous" at the time.

The scandal deeply affected the couple, with Victoria succinctly stating in the documentary: "We were against each other." In a poignant moment in the series, when director Fisher Stevens inquired how they coped with the media frenzy, David shared: "There were some horrible stories that were difficult to deal with. It was the first time that me and Victoria had been put under that kind of pressure in our marriage."

Victoria admitted in her solo interview that she and husband David have faced the 'hardest times' during their stint in Spain. She confessed: "100 percent. It was the hardest period for us. Because it felt like the world was against us. And here's the thing; we were against each other, if I'm being completely honest. You know, up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else. But we were together. We were connected. We had each other."

She didn't stop there, adding: "But when we were in Spain, it didn't really feel that we had each other either. And that's sad. I can't even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me." During this tumultuous time, David equated their experience to feeling like they were "drowning" and confessed: "I don't know how we got through it in all honesty."

David added: "When I first moved to Spain it was difficult because I've been part of a club and a family for my whole career from the age of 15 to I was 27 years old. I get sold overnight. The next minute I am in a city. I don't speak the language. More importantly, I didn't have my family."

The revealing interviews with both David and Victoria were played alongside footage of the couple from April 2004 at the French ski resort of Courchevel where they had what were described as "make or break" talks for their marriage at the time. Looking back on that period, David recalled: "Every time that we woke up we felt you know, there was something else and you know, I think we both felt at the time that we were, not losing each other, but drowning. There were some days that I would wake up and think how am I gonna go to work? How am I gonna walk onto that training pitch? How am I going to look as if nothing's wrong. I felt physically sick every day. When I opened my eyes. 'How am I going to do this?'

When the director asks how they survived, David admitted: "I don't know how we got through it in all honesty. Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult. But we are fighters. And at that time we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. But ultimately it's our private life."

Elsewhere in the documentary, Victoria confesses on camera that she has now "made peace" with some things that have happened in her life, which could be a possible nod to her marital problems. "I probably didn't realise half of what I talked about until I sort of started this, what should we call it? This therapy?" Victoria mused. "I feel at peace with a lot of what maybe in our first session was still a lot of pent up anger, frustration. I understand it now." Beckham agrees and said: "It has been some form of therapy this, when I've looked back."

Fortunately, the couple, who share four children together, managed to rekindle their bond and are set to celebrate 25 years of wedded bliss this summer. According to the pair, participating in the Netflix series was a therapeutic journey. Victoria found reconciliation with some bitter aspects of her past, stating: "I feel at peace with a lot of what maybe in our first session was still a lot of pent-up anger, frustration. I understand it now."

In the final scenes of the series, the couple and their children are seen dancing to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's hit 'Islands in the Stream'. Overcome with emotion, Beckham tearfully tells his wife: "Going through every part of my life, it has given me clarity on many things. And one of the things, which is the most important thing to me is what we've got."

Earlier this year, ahead of her 50th birthday celebrations, Posh revealed that she and hubby David shared a romantic moment when they finally got round to watching the last episode of their Netflix show. She recalled how she and Becks couldn't face watching the last episode until after it was released last October.

Talking about deciding to watch it, Victoria said she and David were on a flight and felt "proud" of their lives as they watched the episode. In a chat with Sunday Times Style in April, she revealed: "It was on a flight to Miami that we finally watched it. David suggested we get a bottle of wine. It was a nice moment - we both felt really proud. I don't get nervous when I'm playing myself but it was certainly a real process. Going over all that stuff again can be ... There are also things that are hard to remember. Like, Fisher [Stevens, the series' director] would bring up a goal that David scored 25 years ago, and that can make you quite anxious."

Victoria also admitted that she was taken aback by how much more relaxed she appears now compared to her earlier years in the spotlight. She confessed: "I looked at some pictures of myself recently and was really struck by how happy I looked. In the past I've always looked at those red carpet pictures of me and seen a woman who looks nervous and insecure. Everyone else saw a woman who looked grumpy and stern - I suppose that's how I got the reputation of being such a miserable cow."

The House of Beckham by Tom Bower is released on June 20 and is available to buy from Amazon.
