Javelin Safety Recommendations

The throwing area MUST be roped off and clearly marked.Injuries are most common during warm-ups. A certified official should run warm-ups. The throwing sector should be open to groups of throwers and then closed while javelins are retrieved. Once the sector is clear it can be opened for further warm-up throws.Javelins, when not in use, should be placed on a rack or laid down flat on the ground. Injuries occur when athletes accidentally walk into the back tip of the javelin. All javelins being used in competition must have the IAAF sticker on it showing that it is one of the “new” (only javelin acceptable for competition) javelins. Officials and coaches cannot emphasis safety regarding the javelin enough.

FAQs

Can a senior play on a JV team in Massachusetts? ›

SENIORS – Senior athletes are not eligible for Junior Varsity competition and shall not play on any JV team in any sport. Exceptions: Cross Country (see the Cross Country By-Laws for specific details) and by consent of the League Commissioner.

Can 8th graders play high school sports in Massachusetts? ›

A middle school student is eligible to represent a senior high school on its athletic teams only when the MIAA member high school includes those grades and they are under the direct “jurisdiction” and “supervision” of the high school principal (see MIAA Rule 51 for definitions).

Is JV good for a freshman? ›

JV teams help freshmen get enough experiences and skills to improve qualities likened to higher grade players in varsity. Moving from Freshman to JV and then finally to Varsity is a common path that many athletes will take in their highschool sporting careers.

How hard is it to make varsity? ›

All things considered, making a Varsity team as a freshman requires dedication. However, it can absolutely be done, as proven by the above athletes, and the level of difficulty in making a team depends on the year and on the sport itself.

Can you play JV football as a senior? ›

Nope, seniors are generally ineligible for JV competition.

Cross country might be your saving grace, but for most sports, that JV dream is gonna have to stay just that – a dream.

Can a varsity player play down to JV? ›

A lot of teams don't take seniors (or even juniors) on JV, because the point of JV is to prepare players for Varsity — meaning a senior on JV would be a bad investment. It's wonderful that you've been put in a position where you can still compete your senior year.

Can you play JV and Varsity at the same time in football? ›

Can you participate in both JV and varsity teams? While it is possible to play in both JV and varsity games, it's tougher to practice in both teams.
