Irene Merrill Mason Columnist 40 Years Irene Merrill Mason 92 columnist for The Sunday Republican for the past 40 years died Sunday night in a Harrisonburg Va hospital Born in Minneapolis Minn she had lived in Blandford for many years before moving two years ago to 680 Maryland Ave in Harrisonburg Mrs Mason wrote more than 2500 to columns for The Republican starting in 1940 Her writing emphasized her personal ex periences throughout the Connecticut Valley and people places and things she remembered She was graduated from St Clara Academy in Dubuque Iowa and taught school there two years before her marriage to the late Leonard Mason She wrote many short stories and articles for fiction magazines and two books for girls or several years while living in Blandford she was also the local cor respondent for The Morning Union writing daily accounts of news events in her town She loved writing and once said away at a ty pewriter with two fingers is one of the pleasantest ways to spend Mrs
