Nutrient Deficiencies. When trees are overcrowded, they have to compete with one another for nutrients in the soil, which can cause them to need more fertilizer to remain healthy. Soil only contains a finite amount of nitrogen and other nutrients that are essential for growth.

When trees grow too close together, they have to compete for these resources. This results in weaker trees that are more susceptible to disease, insect infestations, and drought. Because of these susceptibilities, overstocked forests, or dense forests with too many trees, are prone to high rates of tree mortality.

Excessive tree planting can cause problems

Planting more trees seems like a no-brainer for fighting climate change. But there's a twist: forests can also release other gases that contribute to warming, like methane and ozone.

Trees and parks do have their disadvantages. Trees can be difficult and costly to maintain, especially after storms. Hurricane and tornado damage of trees can block roads needed for emergency access. They often are the cause of electrical outages – branches and trees taking down power lines.

Tree planting programs often lead to a loss of biodiversity, taking us further away from achieving a nature-positive world. Mexico's Sowing Life campaign destroyed over 180,000 acres of forest in its first year due to a perverse incentive structure.

Planting too deeply

Deep planting causes bark deterioration at the soil line, which can eventually kill the plant. It usually takes a few seasons for a tree or shrub to die from this.

Less than three months later, up to 90 percent of the saplings were dead, the Guardian reported. The trees were planted at the wrong time and there wasn't enough rainfall to support the saplings, the head of the country's agriculture and forestry trade union told the paper… Forests are, of course, good for the planet.

Planting a lot of them would – eventually – absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Although any tree absorbs carbon, forests – with their many interwoven elements – provide many other benefits. They clean our air and water, reduce flooding, and provide habitat for other plants and animals.

Forest clearance for farming is the greatest threat to tree species globally. The conversion of land for crops such as coffee, soybeans, and palm oil impacts 29 percent of tree species, while 14 percent of tree species are threatened by livestock farming.

However, if you plant trees too closely together, a number of issues may arise. For example, sunlight will not be able to filter down to the lower leaves, moisture won't be able to make it to the soil and your trees won't be able to get the nutrition that is needed.

Trees that are too close to buildings may be fire hazards. Soffit vents provide easy access for flames to enter a house. Leaves and broken branches can clog gutters, potentially causing ice dams or water penetration into the building. Old, damaged or otherwise weak trees may fall and endanger lives and property.

Additional negative impacts of afforestation are also likely, such as the reduction of native biodiversity and productivity, substantial water yield losses, and changes in nutrient cycles, which can exacerbate other global change drivers.

A tree in front of a house should be appealing from the view of the street but should not overwhelm the house itself. A large shade tree can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent annually by cooling the home in summer and providing a windbreak in winter months.

Trees solve landscape problems by providing framing and background. Trees also improve the appearances of our homes. They can help to absorb noise, freshen the atmosphere, serve as windbreaks, provide privacy, protect, shade, shelter and divide grounds into several use areas.

In one year, 100 mature trees can remove 50 Metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent and 430 pounds of pollution from the atmosphere! Forests across the US are the nation's largest carbon sink and offset between 10-20% of our annual fossil fuel emissions.

However, if you plant trees too closely together, a number of issues may arise. For example, sunlight will not be able to filter down to the lower leaves, moisture won't be able to make it to the soil and your trees won't be able to get the nutrition that is needed.

A rough estimate is that an inexperienced, but physically fit, tree planter can plant 1,000 to 3,000 seedlings per day. If you want to plant more than 1,000 trees, you may want to consider using a planting machine.
