What surfaces can you use rustoleum on? ›

Prepared and primed: metal, concrete, brick, cinder block, wood, drywall and previously painted surfaces.

Dry and recoat times are based on 70°F (21°C) and 50% relative humidity. Allow more time at cooler temperatures. Dries to the touch in 1 hour, to handle in 3 hours and is fully dry in 24 hours. Recoat at any time.

Dries to the touch in 2-4 hours, to handle in 5-9 hours and is fully dry after 24 hours. Recoat after 24 hours.

Run a heater near the object.

The higher the temperature in the room where you're painting, the more quickly the paint will dry. You can turn up the heat in your house or use a small space heater. Set up the space heater so it's pointing at the object you spray painted.

When paint remains tacky to the touch and refuses to dry, the issue often lies with quality of the paint. But the problem may also be linked to your painting environment (in terms of humidity and temperature) ​or application issues like failing to prepare the surface properly or not letting the paint dry between coats.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Wash the surface with a commercial detergent, or other suitable cleaning method to remove dirt. Rinse with fresh water and dry with a clean cloth. Remove all oil, grease, wax and petroleum based materials with mineral spirits. Remove loose paint and rust with a wire brush or sandpaper.

Priming metal before painting is almost always recommended, as it will prevent rust from bleeding through the new paint. Primer also helps paint stick to metal. If you couldn't get rid of all the rust in the previous step, coat the metal with a zinc chromate primer that's formulated for coating rust.

A minimum of two coats are recommended. No sanding is required between coats. Allow to dry 24 hours for light use and 3 days for full use.

Dries to touch in 20 minutes, to handle in 1 hour, and is fully dry in 24 hours. Apply a second coat or clear coat within 1 hour or after 48 hours. Apply clear in 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart. NOTE: On plastic maximum paint adhesion and durability is achieved in 5-7 days.

Allow treated surface to cure for 24 hours before exposure to moisture (rain, dew, sprinklers, etc). You may cover a treated surface with a tarp after the initial one hour cure to protect from rain and/or dew. Do not apply to hot surfaces or in direct sunlight as this may cause the surface to appear streaked.
