It’s a new calendar year and that means it’s time to dive into the new houseplant trends for 2024! There are some exciting new things trending for your indoor jungle, and some familiar favorites that are still going strong.

A top trend from past years that’s sticking around? Large, statement-making houseplants! It’s a popular look for a reason and you’ll find plenty of large houseplants here at City Floral to pull it off. And, for something new: Living Curtains. In their houseplant category, National Garden Bureau has predicted that 2024 will be the Year of the African Violet. With so many colors, shapes, and forms, African Violets are one of the most popular houseplants in the world. There are so many different flower types, colors, and sizes, you’re sure to fall in love with one (or a few) and they’ll make a delightful addition to your home interiors. Moving right along with our full list of houseplant trends for 2024 and this one has some serious staying power! In recent years, we’ve seen a ton of fiddle leaf figs and Monstera deliciosas and they’re not going anywhere. Houseplants are the key to creating a harmonious, cozy living space and large floor plants can really complete a room, help transition open layouts, and add plenty of visual interest. Don’t be afraid to mix it up from the typical go-to’s with different ficus varieties, palms, and dracaenas.

We know, we know. We just talked all about how large plants are still one of the biggest houseplant trends in 2024 and this seems, well, counter-intuitive. But hear us out. Large houseplants are going to remain incredibly popular but so are miniature indoor gardens. Add some whimsy to your home with terrariums, bonsai, or even fairy gardens. Terrariums will be especially popular this year for this trend and we have everything you need to get started! These tiny ecosystems are so fascinating and they make a beautiful piece of art in your home.

Speaking of art. Plants as art in your home is a whole trend in itself! Styling any space really isn’t complete without a plant or two but this year, plant styling is reaching a whole new level. You’ve seen stunning living walls all over Instagram, in restaurants, shared workspaces, and hotel lobbies but there will be even more in homes in 2024. Picture luscious plant wall installs, impressive vertical gardens, thriving plant shelves, kokedamas galore, and “living curtains” featuring your favorite trailing plants cascading down to create a living room divider. This trend is actually easier to execute than it may seem and if you’d still rather start with something a little simpler, try creating a propagation wall with some cuttings and wall-mounted vases from City Floral.

Foliage that offers a little diversity among a sea of deep green leaves will once again be popular in 2024. “Cyber Lime Foliage” is very “in” this year so we’ll continue to see a rise in popularity for neon green plants. Wellness houseplants are also very much trending this year. Plants like lavender, eucalyptus, chamomile, and aloe vera for various herbal remedies, aromatherapy and other healing and medicinal uses, plus ultra air purifying snake plants all fall into this category of indoor plants.

• Biophilic Design- Having an abundance of plants strategically placed for a sense of calm and harmony, connecting people with nature. This trend involves seamlessly integrating nature into your living spaces and hanging to make room for more plants and really utilizing that vertical space plus more natural materials and organic shapes. You’ll see more terracotta, wood, stone, and handcrafted ceramic pots but fewer industrial-inspired designs, clearly manufactured, or concrete looks.
• Tried & True Plants with a Twist- All those pothos and plant styles like macramé hangers will be back in full force but with a little bit of a twist, like Lemon Meringue pothos instead of your usual green foliage.
• Variegated Plants- This is a look that’s sticking around and will be even more in-demand this year.
• Tech-Enabled Plant Care- Smart plant care devices like moisture meters, sensors, automated watering systems, self-watering pots, plant health monitoring apps, and grow lights to make your plant care a little more ease-filled.
• Rare & Exotic Plants- Plant collectors will continue to search for less-common houseplants to enhance their collections. Plant people will be looking for striking patterns, unusual leaf shapes, or interesting and unique growth habits.
