Are you one to go to your local favorite coffee shop every other Saturday and order your regular drink, and as you sit there sipping on the delicious goodness, you decide for the 100th time that you are going to go home and learn how to make your favorite homemade version of it? That’s me!

Today I am going to share my recipe with you for a homemade Hazelnut Latte. Making your own Lattes is much less complicated than most people assume.

I did not grow up on coffee but since marrying my sweetheart, we love exploring the world of coffee together and this recipe was one I invented I recently using all simple ingredients.

Going into a coffee shop you’ll likely read things on the menu like- cold brew, iced coffee, espresso shots, hazelnut mocha- you get the idea! There are so many coffee drink types out there! I’m not big on knowing everything about them, but the main difference between things like Americanos, Lattes and a Macchiato is the ration of espresso to milk. For a Latte, we are going to use a ration of 1:3. 1 part strong brewed coffee to 3 parts warm frothed milk.

A little history about coffee types:

  • Coffee is the second highest commodity in the world.
  • It is a mainstay of the modern diet
  • It originates back to Ethiopia in the 16th century.

What type of milk to use?

Regular whole milk is most common but definitely not limited to that. You can use almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk, or any other! There is no limit to what you decide to use. I usually just pull out what I have on hand.

Note-regular milk will give you the most foamy effect compared to nut and other milk replacements.

Flavoring options:

Besides hazelnut, you can substitute with Carmel, Vanilla, Mocha, Butter Toffee and much more. Those are some of the common ones. I personally love that distinct hazelnut flavor and most of the time opt for that when I visit a coffee shop. (wink wink).

What is the difference between extracts and flavorings?

While researching this on Google, I came across many interesting facts. Basically what it all amounted to is this-

Extracts are made with an alcohol base while flavorings have a water or oil-soluble base.

Flavoring is the essential oils that are squeezed from the actual ingredient, like vanilla beans, almonds, cherries, lemons, etc. The mixture sits for a duration of time and then strained. The potency can also be doubled and tripled by doing another round of steeping.

In most cases flavoring and extract can be swapped out for one another, but flavoring tends to be stronger then extracts in some cases.

Pro tip- For baking purposes, it is recommended to stick with flavoring (the water and oil bases) because they have less tendency to “leak-out” the essence from the high heat.

Note on syrups to use:

Very common ones are the Torani brand.

Also, the skinny syrups are great! My husband and I stocked up on 5 of these and went through them in no time! They were really good and I liked that they were sugar free/Keto friendly.

When making Lattes, you don’t need any fancy equipment:

Many articles and recipes for Lattes are produced with actual fancy equipment like a milk frother, espresso maker, etc.

When I make our Lattes and coffee drinks lately, I sometimes use an immersion blender to get the frothed effect, but you don’t even need that!

The way this recipe was made was just using a simple old-fashioned, common place, glass jar:) I will include the directions below.

I’ll admit, I would love to have an actual coffee frother someday:)

How to make Hazelnut Latte Recipe

Make a strong pot of coffee. In the meantime, fill a pint jar 2/3-3/4 full with milk. That is about 1 1/2 cups. Put the lid on and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to a minute. Slowly, so as not to crush the bubbles and foam, pour milk into a small saucepan and heat on low. Do not let this get near boiling!

You can also place milk in a mason jar and place in the microwave for about a minute to a minute and a half depending on your microwave. (DO NOT PLACE LID ON JAR!)

(The milk can also be heated BEFORE shaking).

Hazelnut Latte Recipe (6)

Pour hot coffee into your mug, or tall glass of choice. Add two full pumps of hazelnut syrup or about 1/4 teaspoon hazelnut flavoring (be careful to not add too much- the taste of flavorings can be very strong. keep in mind that flavorings are stronger then extracts). If using flavoring, then add about 2 tablespoons of sweetener. My favorites are maple syrup or truvia.

Then pour the warm frothed milk from the jar into the mug. Get the last drops of frothy milk at the bottom of the jar:) Garnish with some whipped cream, a sprinkle of cocoa powder, chocolate sauce or cinnamon, and enjoy!
