Chastity is sexual purity. Those who are chaste are morally clean in their thoughts, words, and actions. Chastity means not having any sexual relations before marriage. It also means complete fidelity to husband or wife during marriage.

Chastity, also known as purity, is a virtue related to temperance. Someone who is chaste refrains either from sexual activity that is considered immoral or from any sexual activity, according to their state of life. In some contexts, for example when making a vow of chastity, chastity means celibacy.

In its simplest terms, living the law of chastity means you “do not have any sexual relations before marriage, and [you are] completely faithful to your spouse after marriage.”

There are three forms of the virtue of chastity: the first is that of spouses, the second that of widows, and the third that of virgins. We do not praise any one of them to the exclusion of the others.... This is what makes for the richness of the discipline of the Church.

On one hand, chaste people restrain, deny, and mortify the impure passions of their soul and the lustful impulses of indwelling sin.

Activities considered a violation of the law of chastity include both adultery and fornication as well as broader behavior.

Researchers have found that chastity before marriage offers many benefits, including a decreased chance of psychological damage from expressing intimacy without commitment, freedom from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unwanted pregnancies, and an increase in marital stability and satisfaction.

Living chaste within marriage means not doing anything to violate that sacred space — whether with another person (adultery), with your mind (p*rnography/fantasy), or even with one another. It's all about honor. Chastity sounds like an old-fashioned virtue.

What are the requirements for chastity? ›

According to the church, chastity means that "sexual relations are proper only between a man and a woman who are legally and lawfully wedded as husband and wife." Therefore, abstinence from sexual relations outside of marriage, and complete fidelity to one's spouse during marriage, are required.

Chastity means to refrain from sexual pleasure or sexual intercourse outside of marriage. Sexual acts are reserved for two people who are married to each other.

Respect another person's agency by always discussing what the boundaries of a relationship are—and never assuming them. Share intentions and motivations with honesty, even (and especially) if it's awkward or difficult. Regard each other as children of God with feelings, hopes, and dreams.

“Virginity was an anatomical state that preceded sexual activity; chastity was a state, both spiritual and psychological, that could be observed through all stages of a person's adult life.” Sanctified by God, marriage and sexual relations between man and wife could be chaste – as could childbirth.
